SUMMARY:Iran Steps Up Its Proxy War Against Israel and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:  \n[READ TRANSCRIPT HERE] \n  \nIran has been at war with Israel and the U.S. for decades but October 7th began a multifront escalation that appears to be a turning point in its willingness to fund\, train\, and weaponize regional terrorism at an alarming rate and level. Iranian-backed terrorists across the region – Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza and Judea and Samaria\, Hezbollah in Lebanon\, the Houthis in Yemen\, and Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria – present national security challenges not just for Israel but also the U.S. Why is Iran suddenly feeling emboldened enough to continually attack U.S. assets in Iraq and Syria\, how close is it to obtaining weapons-grade uranium and ultimately a nuclear weapon\, what can be done about the Houthis aggression in the Red Sea\, and will a new war break out on Israel’s northern border with Hezbollah? These are just some of the issues that we’ll be discussing with Iran-expert\, Behnam Ben Taleblu\, and we hope that you can join us for this in-depth and informative conversation. \nAbout the Speaker: Behnam Ben Taleblu is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) where he focuses on Iranian security and political issues. Behnam previously served as a research fellow and senior Iran analyst at FDD. Prior to his time at FDD\, Behnam worked on non-proliferation issues at an arms control think tank in Washington. Leveraging his subject-matter expertise and native Farsi skills\, Behnam has closely tracked a wide range of Iran-related topics including nuclear non-proliferation\, ballistic missiles\, sanctions\, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\, the foreign and security policy of the Islamic Republic\, and internal Iranian politics. Frequently called upon to brief journalists\, congressional staff\, and other Washington audiences\, Behnam has also testified before the U.S. Congress and Canadian Parliament. \nHis analyses have been quoted in The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Reuters\, Fox News\, The Associated Press\, and Agence France-Presse\, among others. Additionally\, he has contributed to or co-authored articles for Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, Fox News\, The Hill\, War on the Rocks\, The National Interest\, and U.S. News & World Report. Behnam has appeared on a variety of broadcast programs\, including BBC News\, Fox News\, CBS Interactive\, C-SPAN\, and Defense News. Behnam earned his MA in International Relations from The University of Chicago\, and his BA in International Affairs and Middle East Studies from The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.

SUMMARY:Antisemitism in Academia
DESCRIPTION:  \n[READ TRANSCRIPT HERE] \n  \nThis webinar was generously sponsored by Lorraine Pelosof \nWhile pervasive antisemitism on America’s college campuses is nothing new\, the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th unleashed a storm of Jew-hatred not seen since Germany in the 1920s and 30s. The aggressive and violent encounters by Jewish students and faculty members on campuses across the country\, most of which have been met with apathy\, willful blindness\, and callous indignation on the part of administrators who hide behind claims that free speech protects hate speech when directed at Jews (while ignoring that every other “marginalized” group of students must be protected in safe spaces and the like)\, have led to Jewish members of these campus communities feeling frightened\, ostracized\, and alone. The pathetic and embarrassing Congressional testimony of the presidents of MIT\, UPenn\, and Harvard only represent the tip of the iceberg but is there hope that perhaps the breaking of the dam will lead to significant and long overdue changes? Will pushback against Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion bureaucracies – now endemic across America’s universities (and K-12 programs) – continue\, and will the national attention to what it has wrought for Jews on campus lead to a safer and more welcoming environment for them? Or will it require legal action from both individual civil lawsuits and federal investigations to finally effectuate the necessary changes that will lead to Jews being treated with the same respect\, dignity\, and security that is afforded every other student group? Please join us for an enlightening and informative conversation with Ken Marcus and Asaf Romirowsky to learn more about what’s happening to address antisemitism in the academy. \nAbout the Speakers:  \nAsaf Romirowsky Ph.D. is the Executive Director of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) and the  Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA). Romirowsky is also a senior nonresident research fellow at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies (BESA) and a Professor [Affiliate] at the University of Haifa. Trained as a Middle East historian he holds a Ph.D. in Middle East and Mediterranean Studies from King’s College London\, UK\, and has published widely on various aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict and American foreign policy in the Middle East\, as well as on Israeli and Zionist history. \nRomirowsky is co-author of Religion\, Politics\, and the Origins of Palestine Refugee Relief and a contributor to The Case Against Academic Boycotts of Israel. Recently\, he co-edited Word Crimes: Reclaiming the Language of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict\, a special issue of the journal Israel Studies. \nRomirowsky’s publicly engaged scholarship has been featured in The Wall Street Journal\, The National Interest\, The American Interest\, The New Republic\, The Times of Israel\, Jerusalem Post\, Ynet\, and Tablet among other online and print media outlets. \n  \nKenneth L. Marcus is founder and chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law; Professional Lecturer in Law at The George Washington University Law School; Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Center for Liberty & Law at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School; and author of The Definition of Anti-Semitism (Oxford University Press) and Jewish Identity and Civil Rights in America (Cambridge University Press). \nDuring his public service career\, Marcus served as Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education for Civil Rights; Staff Director at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; and General Deputy Assistant U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. \nIn academia\, he formerly held the Lillie and Nathan Ackerman Chair in Equality and Justice in America at the City University of New York’s Bernard M. Baruch College School of Public Affairs and served as Visiting Research Professor of Political Science at Yeshiva University. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Contemporary Antisemitism and previously served as Associate Editor of the Journal for the Study of Anti-Semitism. \nEarlier in his career\, Mr. Marcus was a litigation partner in two major law firms\, where he conducted complex commercial and constitutional litigation. He also currently chairs the Executive Committee of the Federalist Society for Law & Public Policy Civil Rights Practice Group. \nHe has published widely in academic journals as well as in more popular venues such as The Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, Newsweek\, USA Today\, and Politico.  Mr. Marcus is a graduate of Williams College\, magna cum laude\, and the University of California at Berkeley School of Law.

SUMMARY:What Must Not Happen in Gaza\, After the War
DESCRIPTION:  \n[READ TRANSCRIPT HERE] \n  \nFrom US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Director of the European Union\, Ursula von der Leyen\, to South African lawyer Adila Hassim\, who is arguing before a panel of judges in the International Court of Justice in the Hague\, many people are coming up with all sorts of notions about what should happen in Gaza after the war. Only the esteemed scholar\, intellect\, and writer\, Richard Goldberg\, has articulated what must not happen in Gaza after Israel reaches its stated objective of removing Hamas and its terrorist infrastructure from it. Taken from his brilliant Commentary Magazine article\, Richard Goldberg will be able to articulate some of the pitfalls to avoid to ensure that the barbaric events of October 7\, 2023\, are never to be repeated again. \nAbout the Speaker: Richard Goldberg is a senior advisor at FDD. From 2019-2020\, Richard served as the Director for Countering Iranian Weapons of Mass Destruction for the White House National Security Council. He previously served as chief of staff for Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and deputy chief of staff and senior foreign policy adviser to former U.S. Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois in both the U.S. House and Senate. \nAs a staff associate for the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State-Foreign Operations\, Richard worked on a wide range of issues related to U.S. foreign assistance\, including foreign military financing\, international security assistance\, international peacekeeping\, development\, global health and economic support funds. He was a founding staff director of the House U.S.-China Working Group and was among the first Americans ever to visit China’s human space launch center. A leader in efforts to expand U.S. missile defense cooperation with Israel\, Richard played a key role in U.S. funding for the Arrow-3 program\, Iron Dome and the deployment of an advanced missile defense radar to the Negev Desert. \nIn the Senate\, Richard emerged as a leading architect of the toughest sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was the lead Republican negotiator for three rounds of sanctions targeting the Central Bank of Iran\, the SWIFT financial messaging service\, and entire sectors of the Iranian economy. Richard also drafted and negotiated legislation promoting human rights and democracy in Iran\, including sanctions targeting entities that provide the Iranian regime with the tools of repression. His Iran sanctions work was featured in the book The Iran Wars.

SUMMARY:Turning the Victim into the Perpetrator: South Africa’s Case Against Israel
DESCRIPTION:  \n[READ TRANSCRIPT HERE] \n  \nOn December 29\, 2023\, South Africa brought charges against Israel to the International Court of Justice in the Hague for alleged violations of the Genocide Convention in its current military operations against Hamas. Following the barbaric attack on Israel by over 2\,000 Hamas terrorists on October 7th\, in which over 1\,200 Israelis were barbarically massacred\, and approximately 240 Israelis were kidnapped\, Israel commenced its military campaign in Gaza. \nAre the actions of IDF justified legally\, ethically\, and morally? Is Israel’s response to the October 7th attacks disproportionate and does it actually constitute “Genocide” under international law?” Is Israel allowed to use a strong amount of force to eliminate the threat emanating from Hamas? What responsibility does Israel have towards the civilians of Gaza? How are the arguments on both sides of this issue framed? \nAbout the Speaker: Amichai Cohen is an expert on international law and the law of armed conflict. Professor Amichai Cohen is a member of the Faculty of Law at Ono Academic College. He earned his LL.B. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his LL.M. and LL.D. from Yale Law School at Yale University. \nIn the past he served as the Dean of the faculty of Law at the Ono Academic College\, as a visiting professor at American University- Washington College of Law (Washington DC) and at Columbia Law School (New York). He was also a visiting scholar at Cambridge University (UK) and at the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (Lausanne). \nHis books include: Israel’s National Security Law: Political Dynamics and Historical Development (Routledge\, 2011\, with Stuart A. Cohen). [A Hebrew version of the work was published in 2014]; Revolutions and Counter-Revolutions (Hebrew\, 2020); Proportionality in International Humanitarian Law: Consequences\, Precautions and Procedures (with David Zlotogorski\, Oxford UP\, 2021). \nAt the IDI Cohen focuses on issues of the International Law of Armed Conflict\, National Security Law\, and Civil Military Relations. His work on investigations of alleged war crimes was cited extensively in the Turkel Commission Report and in the report of the UN’s Independent Commission of Inquiry on the 2014 Gaza Conflict. \n

SUMMARY:Documenting the Enablers of Hamas War Crimes-UN agencies\, NGO’s\, and Governments
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n  \n[READ TRANSCRIPT HERE] \n  \nInternational attention has now been placed on UNRWA\, because of the complicity and activities of many UNRWA employees during the October 7th massacre. However\, UNRWA is just one of many so-called “humanitarian organizations” and UN agencies who have aided and abetted Hamas\, diverting funding to its terrorist activities\, providing indoctrination and misinformation to media outlets throughout the world and to their own schoolchildren to learn to despise Jews. \nProfessor Gerald Steinberg\, Director of the Program on Conflict Management at Bar-Ilan\, and Director of NGO Monitor will provide an in-depth analysis. \nAbout the Speaker: Professor Steinberg completed his bachelor’s degree in physics and Near Eastern Studies at the University of California at Berkeley\, his master’s degree at the University of California\, San Diego\, and his Ph.D. at Cornell University. In government in 1981. He founded NGO Monitor in 2001.
