SUMMARY:The IRGC's Expanding Presence in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Since the Iranian regime toppled the Shah in 1979\, their goal has been to export the Islamic revolution. The regime views Latin America as an easy target through which to spread anti-American propaganda and flex Iranian influence. In addition to a missionary network that includes media outlets\, educational institutions and mosques\, Iran has also worked to strengthen its ties with Venezuela\, possibly even providing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with long-range missiles capable of reaching the US. \nThere is now an “air bridge” between Iran and Venezuela\, an inconspicuous way to transport senior regime members\, intelligence officials and weapons between the two countries under the guise of a passenger or cargo route. In May\, a Boeing 747 cargo plane landed in Ciudad del Este\, Paraguay\, with no cargo but only the 18-member crew–consisting of seven Iranians and 11 Venezuelans–including a board member of the U.S.-sanctioned Iranian airline Fars Air Qeshm\, and a senior member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Many of these flights coincide with a spike in Iranian activity in Latin America\, including in similar-minded countries like Cuba and Nicaragua. \nWhat is the IRGC – which is supposed to be under international sanctions – doing on our doorstep in Latin America? Where is the Biden Administration in tackling this looming threat? Here to discuss this will be Emanuele Ottolenghi.\n\nAbout our Speaker: Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi is a senior fellow at FDD and an expert at FDD’s Center on Economic and Financial Power (CEFP) focused on Hezbollah’s Latin America illicit threat networks and Iran’s history of sanctions evasion. His research has examined Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\, including its links to the country’s energy sector and procurement networks. His areas of expertise also include the EU’s Middle East policymaking\, transatlantic relations\, the Arab-Israeli conflict\, and Israel’s domestic politics. Prior to joining FDD\, Emanuele headed the Transatlantic Institute in Brussels and taught Israel Studies at St. Antony’s College\, Oxford University. \nHe is author of The Pasdaran: Inside Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\, Iran: The Looming Crisis\, and Under a Mushroom Cloud: Europe\, Iran and the Bomb. Emanuele blogs at The Hill. His columns have also appeared in leading outlets including The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, and London’s The Sunday Times. He obtained his PhD in political theory at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, preceded by undergraduate studies in political science at the University of Bologna.

Caroline is the senior fellow for Middle Eastern Affairs at the Center for Security Policy in Washington\, DC and routinely briefs senior administration officials and members of Congress on issues of joint Israeli-American concern. \nIn 2008\, Caroline’s first solo book\, Shackled Warrior: Israel and the Global Jihad was published by Gefen Publishers. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed book\, The Israel Solution\, published in 2014. She holds a BA in political science from Columbia University and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

SUMMARY:Why Pressuring Israel to Intervene in Russia’s Ukraine War is Misguided and Dangerous
DESCRIPTION:  \nAs Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is joined by Congressional lawmakers in condemning Israel for not providing Ukraine with military support in its war with Russia\, Israel is being placed in a precarious position that ignores geopolitical realities as well as logistical and military considerations and practicalities. The situation is extremely complex involving Iranian and Russian cooperation that some argue may be a testing ground for future aggression with Israel\, Israel’s military operations in Syria\, and the existence of a substantial Russian Jewish population that remains in Russia. Please join us for an in-depth conversation with Jonathan Tobin on why Israel should stay out of the war in Ukraine. \nAbout the speaker: Jonathan S. Tobin is Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish News Syndicate — JNS.org — an international wire service covering the Jewish world and Israel. He’s also a senior contributor for The Federalist and a columnist for Newsweek\, the New York Post\, Haaretz and Israel Hayom\, as well as a regular contributor for other publications such as The Washington Examiner and Commentary magazine. He covers the American political scene\, foreign policy\, the U.S.-Israel relationship\, Middle East diplomacy and the Jewish world. \nPrevious to becoming editor of JNS\, Mr. Tobin was executive editor\, senior online editor and chief political blogger for Commentary magazine. He also served as editor-in-chief of the Jewish Exponent in Philadelphia and editor of the Connecticut Jewish Ledger. \nMr. Tobin has won more than 50 awards including Top Columnist for Jewish publications ten times\, most recently in 2018 and 2019. He appears regularly on television commenting on politics in the United States and Israel\, foreign policy and Jewish affairs\, and lectures on college campuses and to Jewish communities. \nMr. Tobin was born in New York City\, attended local schools and studied history at Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Making Sense of the Recent Israeli Election
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st the citizens of Israel went to the polls and have spoken. They clearly elected a more right-wing government. Likud\, together with other members of the right-wing parties received 65 seats\, of the 120 in their Parliament\, the Knesset\, which is a clear majority and a 20-seat advantage over the left. What are some of the reasons why the Israeli people have decided to cast their votes to the right? Who will be part of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet? How will this government differ from the last in terms of Israel’s national security interests\, the increasing wave of terrorism from the Palestinians\, and the threat from Iran? Many on the left are somewhat hysterical that this election bodes the end of Israeli democracy. How does one respond to such allegations? How will this election affect the structure of the Israeli Supreme Court? How will this election affect relationships with the international community as a whole\, the Biden administration\, with the countries that have signed the Abraham Accords? \nHere to answer these questions and more is Alex Traiman \nAbout the speaker: Alex Traiman is the Managing Director and Jerusalem Bureau Chief of JNS.org. Alex has his finger on the pulse of everything that is happening in Israel and within the Israeli Knesset. He has written scores of articles and had directed and produced major films\, such critically acclaimed as “Iranium” and “Honor Diaries.”

SUMMARY:Is the Iranian Regime Finally Beginning to Crack?
DESCRIPTION:Iran has been confronted with the largest wave of mass protests since Ayatollah Sayyid Ruhollah Khomeini first seized the reigns of power in 1979. These demonstrations followed the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16th\, who was brutally beaten by the so-called “morality police” because a few strands of hair showed through her hijab. \nSince then\, Iranians of all ethnic groups\, ages\, and genders have joined in on these massive demonstrations\, and have courageously stood up to the barbaric savagery of the regime\, many of which have been arrested\, thrown from buildings\, or shot on the spot. \nOn Tuesday\, the Iranian parliament voted to employ the death penalty against the protesters. At least 14\,000 have been arrested\, and the Norwegian-based Iran Human Rights Organization has reported that at least 300 have been executed so far. \nYet\, some are arguing that there are some hopeful signs that the regime is beginning to crack. One of these analysts is Reul Marc Gerecht\, who together with Ray Takeyh wrote this piece for last week’s Wall Street Journal \nAbout the speaker: Reuel Marc Gerecht is a senior fellow at FDD where he focuses on Iran\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, terrorism\, and intelligence. He was previously a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the director of the Middle East Initiative at the Project for the New American Century. Earlier\, he served as a Middle Eastern specialist at the CIA’s Directorate of Operations. Reuel is the author of The Wave: Man\, God\, and the Ballot Box in the Middle East (Hoover Institution Press\, 2011)\, Know Thine Enemy: A Spy’s Journey into Revolutionary Iran (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux\, 1997) and The Islamic Paradox: Shiite Clerics\, Sunni Fundamentalists\, and the Coming of Arab Democracy (AEI Press\, 2004). He has been a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly\, as well as a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal\, The New York Times\, The Dispatch\, and other publications.

SUMMARY:Understanding China’s Global Goals and Alliances and Why They Threaten the World
DESCRIPTION:As China’s global ambitions – militarily\, technologically\, and economically – remain unanswered by the U.S.\, the world’s only superpower with the capability and wherewithal to meet global challenges\, threats to our standing and the security of our allies around the world are growing at a frightening pace. As the U.S. withdraws on the world stage and realigns its interests both domestically and internationally\, China’s rise may reach the point of no return. David P. Goldman joins us to discuss these critically important issues and what\, if anything\, we can do to stop China’s march to develop a new pax Sinica in the Middle East\, replacing the pax Americana that the Obama administration ended\, and a regional hegemony in Asia that will project power – and fear – far and wide \nAbout the speaker: David P. Goldman is Deputy Editor of Asia Times and a Washington Fellow of the Claremont Institute. He headed research groups at Bank of America\, Credit Suisse\, and other Wall Street firms\, and was a partner at Reorient Group\, a Hong Kong investment bank. He has consulted for the US Department of Defense and the National Security Council. His most recent book is You Will Be Assimilated: China’s Plan to Sino-Form the World.

SUMMARY:While America Sleeps\, Iran and Russia Are Subverting the United Nations
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThis year\, we have witnessed Russia and Iran blatantly violate the founding principles of the UN Charter. As Russia has executed its brutal war on Ukraine\, Iran has blatantly violated UN Resolution 2231\, which\, among other limitations\, prohibits the sale and transfer of ballistic missiles and drones. As you are all most likely aware by now\, Iran has been providing hundreds of drones to Russia to prosecute its war on Ukraine\, killing and maiming hundreds of Ukrainian civilians\, making it an accessory to the crime.  Yet no one seems to be paying attention. \nUN Security Council Resolution has several parts\, one of which modifies and incorporates some of the UN’s former sanctions against Iran\, but each sanction has a “sunset clause”. In less than a year from now\, on October 23\, 2023\, the UN sanction prohibiting the sale and transfer of ballistic missiles and drones will expire. And to make matters worse\, on October 18\, 2025\, all United Nations sanctions against Iran are set to expire. This is occurring as Iran is perilously close to a nuclear breakout. As Gabe Noronha says\, “This is a ticking time bomb”. \nAbout the Speaker: Gabriel Noronha is the Executive Director of POLARIS National Security and a Fellow with JINSA’s Gemunder Center for Defense and Strategy. From 2019-2021\, he served as the Special Advisor for Iran at the Department of State where he coordinated policy and directed the Department’s communications and congressional affairs for Iran. \nFrom 2017-2019\, he worked as the Special Assistant to the Senate Armed Services Committee under Chairmen John McCain and Jim Inhofe\, helping write and pass the annual national security legislation\, the National Defense Authorization Act. \nGabriel previously worked for U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte from 2015-2016. He works on a wide range of national security and political projects. He speaks and conducts research in Spanish\, Russian\, and Mandarin.

SUMMARY:Nexus of Evil: Russo-Iranian Collusion and the Growing Danger of War
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nAs Russia executes its immoral war against Ukraine\, it has become apparent that over 300 of the drones that the Russian army has used to rain down over the Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructures have been manufactured in Iran and sold to Moscow. We also have learned that the Iranians are now manufacturing drones on Russian soil. Just this week\, National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby said that the relationship between Iran and Russia is developing into a “full-grown partnership.” He added that “the support is flowing both ways”\, and that Moscow offers “an unprecedented level of military and technical support” including collaborating between the two nations “on areas like weapons development and training.” There is also a growing concern that “Russia is providing Iran with advanced military components”\, which could include highly sophisticated air missile defense systems such as the Russian S-400\, which is considered the most capable air missile defense system yet invented. \nAs these two adversaries to US national security interests develop deeper partnerships\, this can only empower them and increase their appetite for war\, threatening to destabilize the entire Middle East and of course\, posing an existential threat to the state of Israel. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Stephen J. Blank is Senior Fellow at Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Eurasia Program. He has published over 900 articles and monographs on Soviet/Russian\, U.S.\, Asian\, and European military and foreign policies\, testified frequently before Congress on Russia\, China\, and Central Asia\, consulted for the Central Intelligence Agency\, major think tanks and foundations\, chaired major international conferences in the U.S. and in Florence; Prague; and London\, and has been a commentator on foreign affairs in the media in the U.S. and abroad. \nBlank has advised major corporations on investing in Russia and is a consultant for the Gerson Lehrmann Group. He has published or edited 15 books\, most recently Russo-Chinese Energy Relations: Politics in Command (London: Global Markets Briefing\, 2006). He has also published Natural Allies. Regional Security in Asia and Prospects for Indo-American Strategic Cooperation (Carlisle\, PA: Strategic Studies Institute\, U.S. Army War College\, 2005). \nHe is currently completing a book entitled Light From the East: Russia’s Quest for Great Power Status in Asia to be published in 2014 by Ashgate. SUMMARY:Speaking In Solidarity With the Brave Dissidents in Iran
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nAs we write these words\, every single one of Iran’s 33 provinces and over 100 of the Islamic Republic’s cities has seen their streets roiling over in protests against their repressively brutal tyranny. Approximately 18\,000 Iranian dissidents have been rounded up and imprisoned\, and approximately 500 have been randomly shot or otherwise killed in the streets during the protests\, including 58 children 16 years of age and below. Two people have already been hung\, and the regime is planning to execute several more. \nYet\, these courageous protesters are not discouraged. The regime’s venality has not deterred them\, one iota\, but has had a paradoxical effect and they have somehow summoned up the courage to keep continuing in their valiant struggle for freedom from this suffocating theocracy. \nWhat’s propelling them to continue on in the face of the possibility that they might be shot on the spot\, rounded up to be tortured or raped in a notorious Iranian prison\, or even face execution by hanging? Will the momentum continue? Does this signal the beginning of the end of the Islamic Republic? Here to answer these questions and more is Navid Mohebbi\, who himself was imprisoned and beaten up by the Iranian thugs. \nAbout the Speaker: Navid Mohebbi is NUFDI’s Advocacy Director and a long-time democracy advocate and a former political prisoner in Iran. He has written extensively on Iran’s political and social affairs both in Persian and English and worked with many civil society organizations in Iran on a range of political\, human rights\, and women’s rights issues. \nNavid is responsible for designing and implementing strategies to advance NUFDI’s mission and policy goals and is tasked with building relationships with key policymakers and grassroots organizations. He also leads NUFDI’s strategic growth initiatives while contributing to overall policy. \nNavid was born and raised in Iran. He holds a BA in international relations and Middle Eastern studies from George Washington University\, and an MA in Security Studies from the University of Massachusetts. \nNavid regularly advises the U.S. government on Iran policy and is a regular contributor to Persian and English language media outlets. His articles have appeared in Wall Street Journal\, Washington Times\, Radio Free Europe\, etc. Before joining NUFDI\, Navid worked as a media analyst for the U.S. State Department. He also completed a DOD-funded program where he researched the impact of climate change on political stability in Iran for the Federal Division of the Library of Congress.

SUMMARY:The Fragile Israeli-Jordanian Peace: Escalating Friction\, the Impact on Regional Security\, and U.S. Interests
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\n  \nForeign policy expert Dr. Jonathan Schanzer published an insightful report on the state of Israeli/Jordanian relations entitled\, Neither Here Nor There: Jordan and the Abraham Accords\, in which he summarized\, “For the two decades that followed [the 1994 peace agreement between Israel and Jordan]\, observers referred to Jordanian-Israeli ties as the “warm peace\,” particularly compared to the frosty ties Israel maintained with Egypt and the collapse of Oslo. However\, since 2020\, if not before then\, Jordanian peace has turned decidedly cold. It is especially frigid now compared to the rapidly growing ties between Israel and the UAE\, Bahrain\, and Morocco. Even relations between Israel and Egypt have improved. With rhetoric that increasingly echoes the sentiments of rejectionist Arab nationalists or even Islamists\, Jordan’s current policies appear to run counter to the current trendlines of the Middle East…. All of this should come as unwelcome news to the United States and to America’s Middle East allies. In anticipation of intensifying great power competition with China\, and perhaps to a lesser extent Russia\, it is crucial for Washington to project unity among allies in the Middle East.” Join us to hear an in-depth discussion with Dr. Schanzer on these critically important issues including strategies for both the U.S. and Jordan to employ in order to maintain and strengthen the decades-long peace between Israel and Jordan \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is senior vice president for research at FDD\, where he oversees the work of the organization’s experts and scholars. He is also on the leadership team of FDD’s Center on Economic and Financial Power\, a project on the use of financial and economic power as a tool of statecraft. \nJonathan previously worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury\, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers. He has held previous think tank research positions at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Middle East Forum. \nJonathan has written hundreds of articles on the Middle East\, along with more than a dozen monographs and chapters for edited volumes. His new book\, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas\, Israel and Eleven Days of War (FDD Press 2021)\, challenges and corrects some of the wildly inaccurate news reported during the conflict. It is the first book published on the war. His three other books have made unique contributions to the field. State of Failure: Yasser Arafat\, Mahmoud Abbas\, and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State (Palgrave Macmillan 2013) argues the main roadblock to Palestinian statehood is the Palestinian Authority’s political dysfunction and mismanagement. Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine (Palgrave Macmillan 2008) is still the only book on the market that analyzes the ongoing Palestinian civil war. Al-Qaeda’s Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups and the Next Generation of Terror (Washington Institute for Near East Policy 2004) was the first to explore the al-Qaeda franchises of the Middle East.  \nJonathan often testifies before Congress and publishes widely in the American and international media. He has appeared on American television channels such as Fox News and CNN\, and Arabic language television channels such as Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera.

SUMMARY:The Incoming Israeli Government’s Policies and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n  \nAs the new Israeli government begins its work\, its challenges are as multiple as they are complex. Many critics outside of Israel have already threatened to cut off ties with the new government\, even before they have assumed office.  Before passing judgment on the incoming Israeli administration is essential to have an understanding of the actual policies of this new government and some of the many challenges that this government and the state of Israel are currently facing in the Middle East. \nListen to the highly decorated Israeli Brigadier General Amir Avivi as he examines the complicated situation facing this government and some of its multiple challenges. \n  \nAbout Amir Avivi: \nAuditing and Consulting Department of the Israeli Defense Establishment (including the Israel Defense Force\, the Ministry of Defense\, and Israeli Military Industries). SUMMARY:Why do we in the West\, treat Qatar\, the Icon of Evil\, With Kid Gloves?
DESCRIPTION:This is a very complex and sensitive issue. Qatar has very close relationships with Iran and is the chief funder of Hamas\, as well as Palestinian Islamic Jihad. And yet\, the United States maintains the Al Udeid Air Base\, just west of Doha\, NASA maintains relations with Doha\, and Boeing has recently signed a 20 billion dollar deal with Qatar Airways\, one of the largest in their history. On January 31\, 2022\, President Biden called “Qatar a good friend and a reliable partner and ally”\, and also was designated by the President as a “major\, non-NATO ally.” \nWhy does everyone in the West continue to treat Doha with kid gloves? \nHere to examine this is Hillel Frisch. \n  \nAbout Hillel Frisch: \nHillel Frisch is a professor emeritus in the Departments of Political Studies and Middle East Studies at Bar-Ilan University\, Israel\, and a senior research associate at Jerusalem Institute of Strategy and Security. Fluent in Arabic\, he is the author of several books and numerous articles on Middle East and Palestinian politics. Amongst his latest studies are “Rethinking the “Arab Spring”: Winners and Losers\,” Middle East Quarterly (2021)\, “The Palestinian Military\, Two Not One\,” Oxford Handbook on Military and Security Studies (2021) “Jordan and Hamas\,” Handbook on Jordan (2019) and “Assessing Iranian Soft Power in the Arab World from Google Trends\,” The Journal for Interdisciplinary Middle Eastern Studies (2019). He has frequently published in the Jerusalem Post\, and many of his articles have been disseminated in other venues such as The Daily Alert. \n

SUMMARY:When Will the Biden Administration Stop Funding Palestinian Terrorism
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nLast month\, America First Legal filed a lawsuit against President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken for violating the Taylor Force Act\, federal legislation that prohibits the government from providing funds to the Palestinian Authority until it stops supporting terrorism including its pay-for-slay program that financially rewards terrorists and their families for killing Jews. Signed into law by President Trump in 2018\, the Taylor Force Act led to all economic aid to the PA being put on hold until the State Department certifies that the legislation’s requirements were met. Unfortunately\, upon entering office\, President Biden and his State Department have ignored the law and reinstituted sending hundreds of millions of dollars to the PA annually subverting the will of Congress and the American people. \nJoin us for a discussion of what led to the passage of the Taylor Force Act\, why its enforcement is critically important\, and the litigation that will hopefully lead to U.S. policy that ends sending U.S. taxpayer dollars to the terrorists in Israel. We will be joined by plaintiffs Sarri Singer\, a survivor of a Palestinian terror attack in Jerusalem\, and Stuart Force whose son Taylor was murdered on the boardwalk in Jaffa by a Palestinian terrorist and serves as the namesake of this important piece of legislation\, and Julie Strauss Levin\, one of the AFL lead attorneys representing the plaintiffs in this case. \nAbout the Speakers: \nStuart Force has a distinguished record of service to our country. From 1973-1982\, he served as an Officer and Pilot in the United States Air Force and the Colorado Air National Guard. After retiring from the Air Force\, Mr. Force was a commercial pilot for Southwest Airlines until his retirement in 2009. \nStuart and his wife Robbi Force were instrumental in passing vital legislation aimed at ending the Palestinian Authority’s policy of financially rewarding Palestinian terrorists. The bill\, known as the Taylor Force Act\, was named in honor of the Forces’ son Taylor who was tragically murdered by a Palestinian terrorist while in Israel in 2016. Since then\, Stuart and Robbi have dedicated themselves to honoring their son’s memory by working to enact meaningful reform through efforts like the Taylor Force Act. \nJulie Strauss Levin is an attorney with extensive experience in the for-profit and non-profit spaces.  Julie is currently senior counsel at America First Legal Foundation and is also principal of IGMP\, LLC.  She previously served as General Counsel of Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce and as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Feld Entertainment\, Inc. \nJulie was honored to be appointed by President Donald J. Trump to the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad as well as the 1776 Commission. She was also appointed this past year by Governor Glenn Youngkin to sit on his newly created Commission to Combat Antisemitism and serves on the Virginia Israel Advisory Board. \nJulie devotes significant time to multiple pro bono and charitable causes.  She is on the Board of Directors of Our Community Salutes\, the lay Advisory Council of the Coalition for Jewish Values\, and the Advisory Board of the Gross Family Center for the Study of Antisemitism and the Holocaust. Julie also counsels and advises Young Jewish Conservatives\, and previously served on the Executive Board of EMET. \nSarri Singer: On June 11\, 2003\, Sarri Singer was on Bus 14 in Jerusalem when an 18-year-old Palestinian terrorist dressed as a religious Jew boarded and blew himself up. 17 people were killed\, including all those seated and standing around her\, and over 100 people were injured. Sarri was hospitalized for two weeks and then returned to New Jersey to be with family. Her story became high profile. She appeared on television and radio interviews and spoke before Congressmen and Senators in Washington\, D.C.\, and politicians in New York and New Jersey. \nSarri is the Founder and Director of Strength to Strength (www.stosglobal.org)\, which focuses on bringing together victims of terrorism together from around the world and assisting with long-term psychological needs. Sarri has addressed audiences throughout the United States\, Canada\, Europe\, South America\, and Israel and continues to share her unique insight into the ongoing struggle for victims of terror in Israel and around the world.

SUMMARY:The Failed State of Lebanon: The Challenge for the United States and Israel
DESCRIPTION:The late December murder of an Irish member of UNIFIL\, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon\, UNIFIL has once again brought some attention to the failed state of Lebanon. UNIFIL was established in 1978 to temporarily maintain the peace between Israel and Hezbollah. Forty-five years after its formation\, we are examining whether it is fulfilling its mission\, what its relationship is with the Lebanese Armed Forces and its relationship with Hezbollah. \nThe state of Lebanon was once known as the “Riviera of the Middle East”. However\, since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran\, Lebanon has become a hostage of the Iranian terrorist group\, Hezbollah\, and is considered a success story for the Iranian regime. They have dreams of replicating further Shiite proxy states of Tehran throughout the globe. \nListen to David Schenker\, a renowned expert on the Levant\, as he examines whether UNIFIL has succeeded in its mission\, what its relationship is with Hezbollah\, and with the Lebanese Armed Forces. \nAbout the Speaker: David Schenker is the Taube Senior Fellow at The Washington Institute and director of the Program on Arab Politics. Confirmed by the Senate on June 5\, 2019\, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs through January 2021. In that capacity\, he was the principal Middle East advisor to the secretary of state and the senior official overseeing the conduct of U.S. policy and diplomacy in a region stretching from Morocco to Iran to Yemen\, with responsibility for eighteen countries\, the Palestinian Authority\, and Western Sahara. He also supervised more than 9\,000 staff and administered an annual budget in excess of $7 billion. \nIn policy terms\, he led the bureau’s efforts to advance American interests abroad and strengthen U.S. partnerships and alliances across the region. Via diplomacy and the effective allocation of resources and assistance—as well as through imposition of sanctions—he worked to promote human rights\, deter terrorism\, fight corruption\, and push back against regional adversaries. In addition to developing and implementing the U.S. strategy on China in the region\, he worked to heal the Gulf rift between Qatar and neighboring states\, resolve intractable conflicts in Libya and Yemen\, consolidate the Abraham Accords\, and counter malign Iranian influence in the Middle East. \nPrior to joining the State Department\, Schenker worked as the Aufzien Fellow and director of the Beth and David Geduld Program on Arab Politics at The Washington Institute from 2006 to 2019. During that period\, he authored dozens of op-eds\, journal articles\, and PolicyWatches about Jordan\, Lebanon\, Hezbollah\, and Egypt\, among other topics\, and contributed chapters to Institute monographs such as Beyond Islamists and Autocrats: Prospects for Political Reform Post Arab Spring (2017) and No Good Outcome: How Israel Could be Drawn into the Syrian Conflict (2013). He also published a chapter on U.S.-Lebanese relations in Lebanon: Liberation\, Conflict\, and Crisis (Palgrave\, 2009)\, and authored Egypt’s Enduring Challenges (2011)\, an Institute monograph focusing on the post-Mubarak situation. \nPreviously\, from 2002 to 2006\, Schenker served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Levant country director\, the Pentagon’s top policy aide on the Arab nations of the Levant. In that capacity\, he advised the secretary and other senior Pentagon leadership on the military and political affairs of Syria\, Lebanon\, Jordan\, and the Palestinian territories. He was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service in 2005. \nPrior to joining the government in 2002\, Schenker focused on Arab governance issues as a research fellow at The Washington Institute\, and worked as a project coordinator for a Bethesda-based contractor responsible for large\, centrally funded USAID programs in Egypt and Jordan. He also authored the Institute books Dancing with Saddam: The Strategic Tango of Jordanian-Iraqi Relations (copublished with Lexington Books\, 2003) and Palestinian Democracy and Governance: An Appraisal of the Legislative Council (2001). His writings on Arab affairs have appeared in a number of prominent scholarly journals and newspapers\, including the Wall Street Journal\, Los Angeles Times\, and Jerusalem Post.

SUMMARY:The Palestinian Authority: Guilty of Child Abuse
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nLast weekend\, a Palestinian child of merely 13 years of age\, shot an Israeli father and son as they were eating in a Jerusalem restaurant. It is no wonder. Ever since the Oslo Accords were signed on September 13\, 1993\, many have thought of the Palestinian Authority as the reasonable partner\, working in opposition to Hamas\, Palestinian Islamic Jihad\, the Lions’ Den\, and other terrorist groups. Yes\, they do work in opposition to those groups\, and in coordination with the IDF\, to save their own skin. However\, they themselves have been guilty of the worst sort of child abuse imaginable\, using every possible means\, the media\, textbooks\, pageants\, sports events\, and summer camps\, to inebriate their youth into thinking that there is only one state\, named “Palestine” that extends from the (Jordan) River to the (Mediterranean) Sea. And worse still\, that becoming a “martyr”\, and killing innocent Israeli and American civilians is the greatest thing one can possibly do for one’s people and one’s nation. \nCome listen to the expert\, Itamar Marcus\, who has devoted the last 30 years of his life to exposing this\, and why it is time that we eliminate the wishful thinking that the Palestinian Authority is the “good cop”\, opposing these other terrorist organizations\, who are the “bad cop”\, and why it is time we finally label the P.A.\, along with these other terrorist organizations\, as the worst sorts of child abusers imaginable. \nAbout the Speaker: Itamar Marcus\, Founder and Director of Palestinian Media Watch\, is one of the world’s foremost experts on the Palestinian Authority (PA). He travels the world speaking to members of Congress\, parliaments\, and governments presenting PMW’s findings that have literally changed the way the world sees the PA. \nMarcus wrote the reports that exposed how the PA names schools\, sporting events\, and streets after terrorist murders; revealed the hate and terror promotion in the PA’s schoolbooks; brought to the world’s attention the PA’s indoctrination of its children to seek Martyrdom; and uncovered that the PA rewards all terrorist prisoners with high salaries. As a result\, four countries have cut off all funding to the PA\, and many more countries have significantly cut funding. \nThe PA has long disparaged PMW and Marcus. Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi called PMW a “toxic organization\,” and Jibril Rajoub\, the #2 in the PA\, called Marcus “the Goebbels of the 21st Century.” In contrast\, ZOA\, EMET\, and Israel Media Watch all honored Marcus and PMW with prestigious awards\, and The Algemeiner named Marcus one of the world’s “top 100 people positively influencing Jewish life or the State of Israel.”

SUMMARY:Israel’s Democracy is Just Fine
DESCRIPTION:In his recent column\, historian Gil Troy wrote\, “Caricaturing the Israeli government as worse than it is\, and Israeli democracy as more fragile than it is\, is a gift to the bash-Israel-firsters in the media\, the professoriate\, Congress and the State Department\, and the rabbinate\, many of whom feel vindicated by the impression that Israel is in crisis—even as each new wave of protests demonstrates the strength of Israel’s democratic culture.”  Given the inflammatory headlines we read daily about the demise of Israel’s democracy\, we invite you to join us for an insightful conversation with Professor Troy who will be discussing the current state of Israel’s political and cultural challenges emanating from proposed government policies\, all in the context of its national security challenges and the stability of its democratic principles. \nAbout the Speaker: A Distinguished Scholar in North American History at McGill University currently living in Jerusalem\, Gil Troy is an award-winning American presidential historian and a leading Zionist activist. He is\, most recently\, the editor of the new three-volume set\, “Theodor Herzl: Zionist Writings\,” the inaugural publication of The Library of the Jewish People (www.theljp.org). Two years ago he co-authored with Natan Sharansky Never Alone: Prison\, Politics and My People\, was published by Public Affairs of Hachette. Recently designated one of Algemeiner’s J-100\, one of the top 100 people “positively influencing Jewish life\,” Gil Troy is the author of  The Zionist Ideas\, an update and expansion of Arthur Hertzberg’s classic anthology The Zionist Idea\, published by the Jewish Publication Society and a 2019 National Jewish Book Award Finalist. He currently writes a weekly column for the Jerusalem Post.

SUMMARY:Israel's Dilemma in the Face of Deepening Russian and Iranian Ties
DESCRIPTION:  \nRead Transcript Here \n  \nSince the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, Iran and Russia have increased their military and economic cooperation. Late last year\, Moscow reached an agreement with Tehran to open a manufacturing plant on Russian soil. Iran in turn is set to receive a number of Russian Sukhoi 35 fighter jets that are able to break the sound barrier in March. Many speculate that Russia will also sell Iran their S-400 air defense system that can track stealth F-35 fighter jets. With heavy Russian and Iranian influence on Israel’s borders in Syria and Lebanon\, Jerusalem sees this as a major threat. What does this changing dynamic mean for Israel and how should it respond? \n  \nJoin Alex Grinberg\, an expert on Iran\, Russia\, and the Arab world\, as he examined Iran’s nuclear threat\, the relationship between Iran and Russia\, the current status of the war in Ukraine\, and what it all means for Israel. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Alex Grinberg\, an expert on Iran\, Russia\, and the Arab world at the Jerusalem Institute for Security and Strategy\, as he examined Iran’s nuclear threat\, the relationship between Iran and Russia\, the current status of the war in Ukraine\, and what it all means for Israel. He holds an M.A. in Arabic Language and Literature. He is fluent in Farsi\, Arabic\, French\, English\, Russian\, and Hebrew. Alex’s main research interest is Iranian intellectual history and modern Shi’a thought. He teaches Persian at Ariel University. Alex held several positions in the IDF military intelligence research department (AMAN). He is currently employed as a geopolitical and intelligence analyst in private firms. Alex was born in Moscow and is hence fluent in Russian and vested in Russian affairs

SUMMARY:Are the Proposed Judicial Reforms a Death Knell to Israeli Democracy?
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n  \nRead Transcript Here \n  \nMany of us have looked on with horror as we see a highly polarized Israeli people torn apart by the proposed judicial reforms. As I write these words\, the first set of bills of the proposed legislation was read before the Knesset\, the Israeli parliament\, and the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are rife with demonstrators\, of an unprecedented number\, perhaps since the proposed Gaza withdrawal of 2005. \nWhat exactly are these reforms and do they actually signal “the end of Israeli democracy” as is so often heard? Is some sort of compromise possible? \nJoining us to answer these questions and more is Professor Avi Bell. \nAbout the Speaker: Avi Bell is an Israeli Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law and at Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Law. Bell received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Chicago\, and his S.J.D. from Harvard. He interned in the office of Israeli Supreme Court judge Mishael Cheshin. \nIn addition\, Bell frequently writes about the Arab-Israeli conflict. He also debated Richard Goldstone in a debate at Stanford Law School entitled “The Goldstone Report and the Application of International Law to the Arab-Israeli Conflict\,” where a few days later\, Goldstone said that “contrary to the report’s assertions\, Israel did not intentionally target civilians.” \nIn 2006\, Bell criticized Human Rights Watch for its reports on the Second Lebanon War\, claiming that the organization’s claims “mislead readers and betray … bias\,” and that “HRW investigation [in Srifa\, Lebanon] was either professionally incompetent or a complete fabrication” and “nothing more than window dressing for predetermined anti-Israel conclusions.” Human Rights Watch responded by claiming that Bell “displays a curious ignorance about even the basic requirements of international humanitarian law” However\, a 2007 report of Human Rights Watch admitted that its “allegation [of criminality in Srifa] turned out to be wrong.” The report stated that “eyewitnesses were not always forthcoming about the identity of those that died\, and in the case of Srifa\, misled our researchers … a visit to the graveyard made it possible to establish that most of those killed in Srifa were actually combatants\,” and concluding that “further Human Rights Watch investigations into a deadly strike at Srifa established that an Israeli attack there killed 17 combatants and five civilians on July 19\, not the 26 civilians claimed in Fatal Strikes” and “Human Rights Watch regrets the serious inaccuracy in its initial Fatal Strikes report.” \nBell was formerly a visiting professor at Fordham University School of Law and the University of Connecticut School of Law. He currently teaches classes on property and intellectual property at University of San Diego School of Law\, and on property\, intellectual property and public international law at Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Law. Bell also serves as Senior Fellow at the Kohelet Policy Forum.
