SUMMARY:The IRGC's Expanding Presence in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Since the Iranian regime toppled the Shah in 1979\, their goal has been to export the Islamic revolution. The regime views Latin America as an easy target through which to spread anti-American propaganda and flex Iranian influence. In addition to a missionary network that includes media outlets\, educational institutions and mosques\, Iran has also worked to strengthen its ties with Venezuela\, possibly even providing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with long-range missiles capable of reaching the US. \nThere is now an “air bridge” between Iran and Venezuela\, an inconspicuous way to transport senior regime members\, intelligence officials and weapons between the two countries under the guise of a passenger or cargo route. In May\, a Boeing 747 cargo plane landed in Ciudad del Este\, Paraguay\, with no cargo but only the 18-member crew–consisting of seven Iranians and 11 Venezuelans–including a board member of the U.S.-sanctioned Iranian airline Fars Air Qeshm\, and a senior member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Many of these flights coincide with a spike in Iranian activity in Latin America\, including in similar-minded countries like Cuba and Nicaragua. \nWhat is the IRGC – which is supposed to be under international sanctions – doing on our doorstep in Latin America? Where is the Biden Administration in tackling this looming threat? Here to discuss this will be Emanuele Ottolenghi.\n\nAbout our Speaker: Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi is a senior fellow at FDD and an expert at FDD’s Center on Economic and Financial Power (CEFP) focused on Hezbollah’s Latin America illicit threat networks and Iran’s history of sanctions evasion. His research has examined Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\, including its links to the country’s energy sector and procurement networks. His areas of expertise also include the EU’s Middle East policymaking\, transatlantic relations\, the Arab-Israeli conflict\, and Israel’s domestic politics. Prior to joining FDD\, Emanuele headed the Transatlantic Institute in Brussels and taught Israel Studies at St. Antony’s College\, Oxford University. \nHe is author of The Pasdaran: Inside Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\, Iran: The Looming Crisis\, and Under a Mushroom Cloud: Europe\, Iran and the Bomb. The former Executive Director and SeniorDirector for Security Policy at JINSA\, Mrs. Bryen was author of the widely republished JINSA Reports. She has worked with the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College and the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv\, and lectured at the National Defense University in Washington. \nMrs. Bryen coordinated programs in the Middle East for military professionals that allowed more than 450 American military officers to engage in professional discussions of issues that both unite and divide the United States\, Israel and Jordan. She also created a program to take the cadets and midshipmen of America’s service academies to Israel for a three-week work/study program that has permitted hundreds of future officers to have a positive\, in-depth experience in Israel. She has also taken Turkish and Israeli military officers to speak at the service academies and has lectured in the  academies as well. \nHer work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal\, the New York Sun and Defense News\, among other outlets\, as well as in JINSA Reports. \nShe is a Member of the Advisory Board of the Aleethia Foundation that provides opportunities for wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars\, and is a Member of the Board of the Naval Academy Jewish Chapel Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:An Iran with 60 kilograms of highly enriched uranium\, who has denied inspection access to the International Atomic Energy Administration;  the rise and empowerment of an array of terrorist groups on Israel’s borders\, many of which are terrorist proxies; the exonerating of terrorist groups who wage war against the citizens of Israel by lofty bodies such as the UN; the rise of cancel culture and wokeness on college campuses and the apparent efforts of the US to withdraw from the region: How does Israel handle all of these challenges and existential threats to its being? \nHere to talk to us about this is Dr. Efraim Inbar\, President of the Jerusalem Institute for Security and Strategy. \nAbout our speaker: Efraim Inbar was the founding director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies\, a position he held for 23 years (1993-2016)\, and a professor of political studies at Bar-Ilan University. He has been a visiting professor at Georgetown\, Johns Hopkins and Boston universities; a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; a Manfred Warner NATO Fellow; and a visiting fellow at the (London-based) International Institute for Strategic Studies. \nHe was president of the Israel Association of International Studies; a member of the Political Strategic Committee of the National Planning Council; chairman of the National Security Curriculum committee in the Ministry of Education; and a member of the Academic Committee of the IDF History Department. He has authored five books: Outcast Countries in the World Community (1985)\, War and Peace in Israeli Politics. Labor Party Positions on National Security (1991)\, Rabin and Israel’s National Security (1999)\, The Israeli-Turkish Entente (2001) and Israel’s National Security: Issues and Challenges since the Yom Kippur War (2008)\, and edited fourteen collections of scholarly articles. He is an expert on Israeli strategic doctrine\, public opinion on national security issues\, US Middle East policy\, Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy\, and Israel-Turkey relations. \nInbar holds a M.A and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago\, after finishing undergraduate studies in Political Science and English Literature at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
