SUMMARY:The Brotherhood: America's Next Great Enemy
DESCRIPTION:Despite Fall of Morsi\, Muslim Brotherhood Remains a Threat \n  \nWhile the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government of Egypt’s Mohammed Morsi has fallen\, counter-protests\, and the threat of violence continues to reign in Egypt as Muslim Brotherhood supporters clash with Egyptian security forces. Meanwhile major international Muslim Brotherhood figures met in Turkey to discuss how to respond to recent developments. \n  \nThis is why understanding the Muslim Brotherhood remains key for America’s policy-makers during a fluid and dangerous time. That’s why EMET is glad to be hosting Investigative journalist Erick Stakelbeck\, author of “The Brotherhood: America’s Next Great Enemy” to discuss the history\, methods\, and goals of the Muslim Brotherhood\, and what to expect from them in the future. Here’s Erick discussing recent events in Turkey with Gretchen Carlson of Fox News Channel. We hope you’ll join EMET at this important event. \nCBN News Terrorism Analyst and correspondent Erick Stakelbeck has traveled the globe to interview Islamic radicals and Muslim Brotherhood operatives to get the scoop on how an organization which collaborated with the Nazis and helped found Al Qaeda\, has co-opted American and European mosques\, destabilized Middle East allies\, and subverted American counter-terrorism policy.  Erick is the author recently released\, highly acclaimed book\, “The Brotherhood: America’s Next Great Enemy”\, which expands and follows up on his 2011 book\, “The Terrorist Next Door: How The Government is Deceiving You About the Islamist Threat.” \nHe is also the host of a weekly CBN program\, “Stakelbeck on Terror”\,  a regular contributor to The Blaze TV\, guest hosting The Glenn Beck Program\, and has made hundreds of appearances as a commentator on television and radio programs including: The O’Reilly Factor\, The Sean Hannity Show\, Your World with Neil Cavuto\, Fox and Friends\, CNN Newsroom\, BBC\, Al Hurra and many more. He is written articles on Islamic extremism\, global terrorism and national security for The Wall Street Journal Europe\, Weekly Standard\, Washington Times\, New York Post\, Jerusalem Post and National Review Online\, among other publications. From 2003 to 2005 he served as a senior writer and analyst at the Investigative Project on Terrorism.

SUMMARY:Egypt's Downward Spiral in Economics\, Politics and Human Rights: What Can and Should the United States Do?
DESCRIPTION:The situation in Muslim Brotherhood-dominated Egypt continues to worsen.  Egypt has become an economic basket case\, with its hard currency reserves depleted\, its tourism industry largely defunct\, and its food supplies shrinking\, potentially threatening its entire population with starvation.  Meanwhile\, the increasingly totalitarian Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood government\, led by President Mohammed Morsi\, largely ignores these deep-seated problems to instead focus on violently cracking down on Egyptian political dissenters\, secular Muslims\, women\, and Coptic Christians\, prosecuting independent press figures and comedians for blasphemy against the government\, and demonizing Jews.  But none of this bad behavior has caused the United States to rethink its approach of providing an annual subsidy of 1.5 billion dollars in American aid\, about 80% of which is directed towards the Egyptian military.  Even when President Morsi repeatedly calls for the re lease of the Blind Sheikh\, a terrorist responsible for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center who is now in prison in the U.S.\, nothing seems to change. \nWhat can\, and should\, the U.S. do about Egypt?  On May 24th\, EMET will convene an expert panel to debate and answer this question.  Our panel will include: \nFeaturing: \nDavid Goldman: David Goldman is a noted demographer and author and an Associate Fellow at the Middle East Forum.  He joined PJ Media in August 2011 after nearly 10 years of essaying as the Pseudonymous “Spengler” at Asia Times Online and two years of editing and writing at First Things.  He’s the author of How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam Is Dying Too).  Mr. Goldman’s career has been split between the financial and cultural worlds\, and gives him a unique perspective.  He has written extensively on cultural and religious matters\, and held senior jobs on Wall Street\, including as the global head of bond research at Bank of America.  David Goldman has been tracking the economic deterioration and financial mismanagement of Egypt in his writings for several years\, utilizing his experience as an economist and demographer.  This is his second appearance at an EMET seminar concerning Egypt; he previously discussed the economic problems facing the Egyptian regime. \nRaymond Stock: Raymond Stock is currently a Shillman-Ginsburg Fellow at Middle East Forum.  He is a former Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic and Middle East Studies at Drew University (2010-11) and Guggenheim Fellow (2007)\, who lived in Cairo for 20 years (1990-2010).  He has a BA in Mass Media/Foreign Affairs from Grand Valley State University (1980)\, and an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan (1983).  With a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania (2008)\, he has published widely on the Middle East in such periodicals as The Financial Times\, International Herald Tribune\, and the Middle East Quarterly.  His translations from Arabic fiction have appeared in Harper’s Magazine\, London Magazine\, and other venues; he has further translated seven books by Egyptian Nobel laureate in literature Naguib Ma hfouz.  Professor Stock was denied entry and deported by the regime of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on a return visit in December 2010\, apparently due to his 2009 article criticizing then-Culture Minister Farouk Hosni’s bid to head UNESCO in Foreign Policy Magazine.  This is his second appearance at an EMET seminar concerning Egypt; he previously discussed the Muslim Brotherhood’s recent efforts to develop a nuclear bomb.\nCynthia Farahat: Cynthia Farahat is a well-known civil rights activist from Egypt and an Associate Fellow at the Middle East Forum.  She was formerly the Advocacy Director for Coptic Solidarity.  She was the co-founder of the Masr el-Om Party\, later called the Liberal Egyptian Party (2003-2009)\, which was a secular\, liberal\, and democratic political party in Egypt.  From 2008-2009\, she was program coordinator and program officer at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty in Cairo\, a multi-national free market think tank.  She has published in National Review\, Middle East Quarterly\, Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) and in other publications in both English and Arabic.  In December 2011\, Ms. Farahat testified before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in the US House of Representatives on the roots of the persecution of the Coptic Christian minority in Egypt.  In 2012\, Ms. Farahat was h onored by EMET with a Rays of Light award for her democratic and human rights activism in the Middle East.

DESCRIPTION:With a Special Guest Appearance by the Film’s Producer\, Noted Terrorist Hunter\, Author and Investigative Journalist\, Steve Emerson \n“The Grand Deception”\, a 70-minute film by the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT)\, investigates the covert structure and growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamist groups\, masquerading under the false moniker of being apolitical religious groups or civil rights groups in the United States\, specifically how they are infiltrating or intimidating major societal institutions from Congress to Hollywood\, from the mainstream news media to federal law enforcement\, from the publishing industry to museums. This film includes never-before-seen interviews with courageous Muslim leaders\, former FBI agents and federal prosecutors\, a prominent Hollywood director\, journalists\, even a top official of the worldwide Muslim Brotherhood.  In addition\, this documentary includes original Brotherhood documents\, unsealed federal documents and most importantly\, secretly recorded audio and video of what these Islamist groups say behind closed doors.

SUMMARY:"The Impact of The Imploding Arab Street on vital US interests\, US-Israel Relations and the Palestinian Issue"
DESCRIPTION:Featuring:  Ambassador (Ret.) Yoram Ettinger \nAs the situation across the Arab world\, from protests in Egypt against the Muslim Brotherhood led regime to the continued civil war in Syria\, continues to devolve after the chaos of the “Arab Spring”\, what impact does it have on long-held American interests in the region? What is the impact on the American-Israel relationship\, as Israel stands alone as the only U.S. ally not wracked by internal conflict and protest? Is an American preoccupation with the Palestinian-issue and the peace process still relevant in a time of rapidly shifting Middle Eastern sands? \nYoram Ettinger will answer these questions\, and others\, as he presents “The Impact of the Imploding Arab Street on Vital US Interests\, the US-Israel Relations\, and the Palestinian Issue.” \nAmbassador (ret.) Ettinger is an insider on US-Israel relations\, Mideast politics and overseas investments in Israel’s high tech.  He is a member of the American-Israel Demographic Research Group (AIDRG)\, which has documented dramatic flaws behind demographic fatalism on one hand and a Jewish demographic momentum on the other hand. \nHe serves as a consultant to members of Israel’s Cabinet and Knesset\, and regularly briefs US legislators and their staff on Israel’s contribution to vital US interests\, on the root causes of international terrorism and on other issues of bilateral concern.\nAmbassador (ret.) Ettinger’s Op-Eds have been published in Israel and in the US\, and is a frequent guest on both on Israel’s and US’ Television and radio\, and is the author of The Ettinger Report\, a widely distributed email newsletter addressing issues of concerns in the Middle East. He was a speaker at the AIPAC Annual Conference.\nAmbassador (ret.) Ettinger did his graduate studies at UCLA and undergraduate at UTEP – served as Minister for Congressional Affairs at Israel’s Embassy in Washington (with a rank of an ambassador)\, Israel’s Consul General in Houston and Director of Israel’s Government Press Office.  He is the editor of Straight From The Jerusalem Cloakroom and Boardroom newsletters on issues of national security and overseas investments in Israel’s high-tech industry.

SUMMARY:Sarah Stern to Speak on Panel discussion\, "The Future of Israel"
DESCRIPTION:The Endowment for Middle East Truth is proud to announce that EMET founder and President Sarah Stern will join a distinguished panel of speakers to discuss\, “The Future of Israel\,” this Wednesday\, February 13\, from 3-4 PM at the U.S. Capitol. \nThis discussion will include a look at whether peace negotiations are practical in the given turbulence of the region\, and what role the Iranian pursuit of nuclear weapons\, the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood\, and other key factors play in the changing Middle East. For more information on this exciting panel\, please see the invitation below. \nPlease RSVP directly to the Harbour League by emailing Kelly Johnson at KJohnson@theharbourleague.org. \nTHE HARBOUR LEAGUE and THE LONDON CENTER FOR POLICY RESEARCH\nCordially invite you to a discussion:\nTHE FUTURE OF ISRAEL\nThe future of Israel is dependent on the maintenance of an overwhelming strike force and a deterrent against long range missiles. Negotiations over land for peace are a chimera that at this time cannot possibly yield a desirable outcome. Some issues to be discussed include: Given the current situation is peace a realistic possibility? Can a two state solution bring peace; if yes\, what would it mean globally? How does Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons affect peace in the region? Will the United States’ contribution of F-16s to the Muslim Brotherhood run Egypt add stability or hurt talks in the region? And finally do both sides really want peace?\nJoin the Harbour League and the London Center for Policy Research as we ask our expert panel to dissect these questions and offer their thoughts on this topic of utmost importance. The panel will include; Rep. Jack Kingston (GA-1)\, Senior Member\, Subcommittee on Defense; Joseph Puder\, President of the Interfaith Taskforce for America and Israel (ITAI); Sarah Stern\, President of Endowment for Middle Eastern Truth and Herb London\, President of the London Center for Policy Research and Harbour League Trustee; Eli Gold\,\nPresident of The Harbour League.

SUMMARY:“The Istanbul Process and the OIC’s Continuing Efforts to Implement Restrictions to Prevent the “Defamation of Islam\, Part II” - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:This was a follow up to the earlier (February 7) panel discussion on the Istanbul Process & the OIC.  The second panel was moderated by Adam Turner\, the Staff Counsel for EMET.  The panel itself featured Clare Lopez of the Center for Security Policy\, Sam Nunberg\, Director of the Legal Project at the Middle East Forum\, Ann Snyder of the Legal Project\, and Deborah Weiss of Vigilance\, Inc.  The panel discussed continuing efforts by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to push international legislation through the United Nations to condemn and eventually criminalize free speech that is critical of Islam and Islamist terrorism.  The OIC has\, for over a decade\, introduced speech-restrictive resolutions at the UN.  Last year\, the OIC introduced Resolution 16/18.  The Obama Administration has proven to be supportive of Resolution 16/18 and the Istanbul Process by which it is to be implemented.  In March of 2011\, Secretary Clinton praised the OIC efforts\, and encouraged the U.S. government to use “shaming” to suppress speech perceived as critical of Islam.  On July 15\, 2011 a summit meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in Istanbul officially launched the “Istanbul Process”.  At that meeting\, Mrs. Clinton committed the United States to a partnership with the OIC for the purpose of implementing the legislative results required by 16/18.  From Dec. 12-14 of 2011\, Ms. Clinton hosted in Washington a second meeting “to discuss” with the OIC “how to implement resolution no. 16/18 on combating defamation of religions…” and that the aim of this and further meetings was “developing a legal basis” for domestic and international laws “preventing inciting hatred resulting from the continued defamation of religions.”  On December 3\, 2012\, the same day as this panel\, the US participated in the third round of the Istanbul Process at Canada House\, in London\, hosted by the UK and Canada \nThe members of this EMET panel continue to believe that US participation in this process undermines the First Amendment.\nThe event was well attended\, and among the crowd was famed talk show host Mark Levin.

SUMMARY:“The Egyptian Bomb” - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:This seminar was jointly sponsored with the Center for Security Policy.  The briefing was given by Professor Raymond Stock\, a former Visiting Assistant Professor of Arabic and Middle East Studies at Drew University (2010-11)\, and Guggenheim Fellow (2007).  He lived in Cairo for 20 years (1990-2010). He was denied entry and deported by the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak on a return visit in December 2010\, apparently due to a critical column he wrote.  With a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania (2008)\, Professor Stock has published widely on the Middle East in such periodicals as The Financial Times\, International Herald Tribune\, and the Middle East Quarterly.  His translations from Arabic fiction have appeared in Harper’s Magazine\, London Magazine\, and other venues.  He has further translated books by Egyptian Nobel laureate in literature Naguib Mahfouz (1911–2006)\, whose biography he is writing for Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in New York.  Professor Stock discussed: the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt; the continuing development of an Egyptian nuclear bomb; and Egypt’s relationship with Iran. \nThis event was extremely well attended\, with a large audience of congressional staffers.

SUMMARY:“Good Money After Bad?: U.S. Aid to Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood\, A briefing with author David Goldman: Is Now the Time to Consider What this Investment Has Yielded The U.S Taxpayer?“ - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:This briefing was by David Goldman\, a columnist who joined PJ Media in August 2011 after nearly 10 years of essaying as the Pseudonymous “Spengler” at Asia Times Online and two years of editing and writing at First Things.  He’s also the author of How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam Is Dying Too).  Mr. Goldman’s career has been split between the financial and cultural worlds\, and he has written extensively on cultural and religious matters.  This bifurcated career focus provides Mr. Goldman with a unique opportunity to examine both the practical and speculative aspects of life.  This particular seminar focused on the increasing problem of Egypt\, which is now controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood.  Since 1979\, America has given Egypt approximately 1.5 billion dollars a year in taxpayer funds.  Since the June election of President Mohammad Morsi\, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood \, we have seen an attack on the U.S. embassy\, a “bloodless coup” which replaced top Egyptian military commanders in the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces with Muslim Brotherhood members or sympathizers\, and an increase in smuggling operations into Gaza.  We have seen the suppression of the press by firing\, and in some cases arresting\, journalists not sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood\, and the movement of Egyptian troops into the Sinai without prior consultation with Israel\, which is in violation of the Camp David Treaty.  Additionally the Muslim Brotherhood leadership in Egypt now openly discusses whether the Camp David Accords should be cancelled altogether.  Most recently\, Morsi suspended judicial oversight for all of his decisions.\nThis event was extremely well attended\, with a large bipartisan audience of congressional staffers.

SUMMARY:THE ROAD TO A CULTURE OF PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST: TRACK III DIPLOMACY: STRATEGY FOR THE MIDEAST PEACE PROCESS TOWARDS THE INCOMING ADMINISTRATION

DESCRIPTION:EMET is pleased to bring to Capitol Hill\, Sgt. Benjamin Anthony\, founder of the non-profit “Our Soldiers Speak”. \nSgt. Benjamin Anthony (IDF. Res.)\, is a combat veteran and combat reservist in the Israel Defense Forces. Specializing as a heavy machine gunner\, Sgt Anthony has taken a full and front line roll in several of Israel’s most recent campaigns to defend it’s citizens in the face of new age terrorist activity. He has served in large operations both within and beyond Israel’s borders. \nSince his release from full- time service\, Benjamin Anthony has established an organization – Our Soldiers Speak- a nonprofit-non-governmental body that has one aim\, clear and singular- to bring the proud truth of Israel’s soldiers from the front lines of combat to the English speaking world\, whenever and wherever audience is granted. \nSgt. Anthony tours English-speaking colleges here in the United States and abroad\, sharing the story of Israel’s fight against terrorism. He’ll also discuss the current situation on American Campuses\, where anti-Israel sentiment\, sometimes bordering on anti-Semitism remains a major issue. \nPlease don’t miss the opportunity to hear about the two key struggles taking place for Israel’s survival\, on the battlefield against terrorism\, and in the academic world\, against delegitimization.

SUMMARY:“Should American Taxpayer Dollars Go to the Palestinians?” - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:This briefing featured Itamar Marcus of The Palestinian Media Watch. \nMr. Marcus gave a detailed briefing on the Palestinian Authority and Hamas’ inability and unwillingness to fulfill its Oslo Accord obligation to suppress all incitement against Jews and Israel and the West.  This seminar was relevant because of the recent decision by the Obama Administration to bypass the expressed will of the United States’ Congress by issuing a waiver to side-step the congressional hold placed on providing funds to the Palestinian Authority. Administration spokesman stated that the delivery of $192 million dollars in funds to the Palestinians were in the interest of American national security\, and claimed that\, “the PA had fulfilled its major obligations\, such as recognizing Israel’s right to exist\, renouncing violence and accepting the Road Map for Peace.”  Mr. Marcus’ presentation included new exclusive video of Palestinian incitement to violence which had been recently played on Palestinian television.\nThe event was well attended.

SUMMARY:Is the Israel-Palestinian Conflict the Core Issue in the Middle East?” and “Voodoo Demographics” - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger\, held two talks before a standing room only crowd. The first topic disputed erroneous assertions that the Israeli-Palestinian issue is the primary conflict in the Middle East\, and presented evidence that American support for Israel is not a primary factor in Islamic terrorism against the U.S. \nThe second topic\, entitled “Voodoo Demographics”\, Amb. Ettinger discussed how the Palestinians have successfully duped world demographers into grossly inflating the number of Palestinians living in Judea and Samaria. Ettinger utilized evidence from a new demographic study to demolish the false but common wisdom that Israel must surrender land if it is to maintain a majority Jewish population. \nThis event was extremely well attended.

SUMMARY:The Istanbul Process and the OIC's Continuing Efforts to Implement Restrictions to Prevent the "Defamation of Islam"
DESCRIPTION:EMET would like to thank the Adelson Family Foundation for making possible this event\, a part of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Policy Seminar Series. This panel discussion was moderated by Hon. Fred Grandy\, former Congressman from Iowa\, who currently works for the Center for Security Policy.  The panel itself featured Zuhdi Jasser\, of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy\, Ann Snyder of the Legal Project at the MEF\, Supna Zaidi of the Lawfare Project\, and Andrea Laffery\, the President of the Traditional Values Coalition.\nThe panel discussed continuing efforts by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to push international legislation through the United Nations to condemn and eventually criminalize free speech that is critical of Islam and Islamist terrorism.  The OIC has\, for over a decade\, introduced speech-restrictive resolutions at the UN. In the past\, these resolutions contained explicit language about “defamation of religions.” Last year\, the OIC introduced Resolution 16/18 without the term “defamation of religions” included in the resolution. Although dropping that term was little more than a cosmetic change leaving speech-targeting language behind and the OIC’s speech-restrictive agenda intact\, the Obama Administration has proven to be supportive of Resolution 16/18 and the Istanbul Process by which it is to be implemented.  In March of 2011\, Secretary Clinton praised the OIC efforts\, and encouraged the U.S. government to use “shaming” to suppress speech perceived as critical of Islam.  Most of the members of this EMET panel eventually concluded that the US was participating in a process intended to undermine the First Amendment.\nThe event was well attended.

SUMMARY:Palestine Betrayed - Event Summary
DESCRIPTION:Author Efraim Karsh is one of the leading scholars of Middle East history\, and discussed his book “Palestine Betrayed” which demolishes some of the classic myths surrounding Israel’s founding\, including false claims that the Arabs were forced out by the Jews during the 1948 fighting\, and that the Arab were willing to compromise with the new state. \nThe Middle East is a region with a long memory\, and steeped in history\, and knowing that history is an important step towards a better Mideast Policy. \nMr. Karsh has published extensively on the Middle East\, strategic and military affairs\, and European neutrality. He is the author of fifteen books\, including Palestine Betrayed (Yale); Islamic Imperialism: A History (Yale); Empires of the Sand: the Struggle for Mastery in the Middle East 1798-1923 (Harvard); Fabricating Israeli History: The “New Historians” (Routledge); The Gulf Conflict 1990-1991 (Princeton); Saddam Hussein (Free Press); Arafat’s War (Grove); and Neutrality and Small States (Routledge).\n\n\n\n\n\n Click to download a PDF transcript of the event

SUMMARY:The “Helicopter Israel West Bank Briefing” without the Helicopter: Topographical and Geostrategic Realities for America in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The Endowment for Middle East Truth\, along with the Republican Study Committee is pleased to co-sponsor a briefing by Mark Langfan on the geostrategic challenges for America in the United States. \nMark Langfan is a noted Israeli security analyst who in 1991 created a 3 dimensional topographic raised-relief map system of Israel. Viewing the 3D Israel map one can easily and quickly be informed of many of the underlying resource and security issues involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict such as West Bank water resources and Israeli ‘defensible’ borders. Over the past 20 years\, Mark has briefed many Congressional and Senate offices\, the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Israel Desk\, and the New York Times Editorial Board using his topographic map of Israel. Mark wrote and published seminal articles concerning the Israeli/Middle East region including the 1992 “Demilitarization Risks” warning of future Palestinian Katyusha rocket barrages from vacated Israeli territory\, the 1995 “US Troops on Golan Quicksand”  warning of the unique topographic dangers of deploying US Troops to the Golan Heights\, and the 2006 “Iran: The 4th Reichastan” exposing the Iranian arming of Iraqi Insurgents against US forces\, and of Iran’s other regional and strategic goals. \nMark’s Israel topographic map system facilitates policy makers by providing an actual scientifically exact topographic chess board on which to understand and game out various options for peace and to better understand the “code” in which Middle Eastern leaders actually talk. Terms such as “Settlement blocks\,” “Jordan Valley\,” “contiguity” and the “Mountains of the Golan Heights” will become crystal clear and easily understandable. In the comfort of Washington DC\, and without having to wear helicopter ear protectors\, one will be able to survey the mountains and valleys of the West Bank\, Lebanon\, and Golan Heights. And furthermore\, one will quickly understand exactly the “whats”\, the “whys”\, and the “wherefores” of the current Middle East negotiations constantly dominating the news. Even those members and staff\, who have visited Israel and received numerous ‘security’ briefings\, will find the 3D Israel map an enriching\, enlightening\, and valuable policy learning experience. \nThe Middle East is heating up: Syrian President Assad continues to massacre his own people in a failing attempt to remaining in power\, and in Egypt the power of the Islamists\, who would end peaceful relations with Israel\, grows.  Iran continues its efforts to develop and deploy nuclear weapons while Turkey takes an increasingly belligerent stance towards Israel\, led by its Islamist President Erdogan\, and the Palestinians’ unilateral statehood bid is well underway. There has never been a more important time to understand the geostrategic elements at play in the this crucial\, troubled region.

SUMMARY:RETHINKING THE END GAME: Improving Lives in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The Endowment For Middle East Truth is a proud co-sponsor of this Z-Street Event which features a number of prominent experts on issues of great import in the Middle East. \nIn light of the agreement between Fatah and Hamas\, which will form a unity government\,  the peace process is quickly unraveling. American foreign policy\, and more importantly\, American law\, forbids providing funds to the Palestinian Authority\, while it includes Hamas. Hamas is a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization\, and providing them material support of any kind would be a federal crime for any private individual or organization.  Now more then ever\, it is vital to rethink American foreign policy. We must move away from the idea that only if more pressure is placed upon Israel\, and more funding is provided to the Palestinian Authority\, peace will break out. We must reexamine the premise of the Oslo years\, where valuable strategic land and a nation’s security were traded away in exchange for promises. Promises\, rarely kept\, and now wiped clean away by Hamas. Instead we must look to new ways to address the Middle East\, seeking a true peace process which takes into consideration the true aspirations\, freedoms and dignities\, of all people. As a result this Z Street conference could not be more timely. We encourage everyone to join us\, alongside some of the world’s foremost experts. \nPlease see below for Registration details\, and we look forward to seeing you. \nINVITATION \nWHAT:    RETHINKING THE END GAME: Improving Lives in the Middle East \nPolicy Summit focusing on re-orienting the Arab-Israeli Peace Process\nWHEN:  \nWednesday\, MAY 4TH\, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. \nWHERE:   Congressional Auditorium in the Capitol Visitors’ Center on East Front at First Street and East Capitol Street\, NE.  Washington\, D.C. \nWHO: \nArabic Studies professor Mordechai Kedar\, Arab Israeli journalist Khaled abu Toameh\, Middle East expert Steven J. Rosen\, Middle East specialist Harold Rhode economist and author George Gilder\, human rights activist Nonie Darwish\, and Middle East political economist Gal Luft.\nWHY:    \nZ STREET believes the goal of the Peace Process should be peace.  The rest of the world\, however\, acts as if the goal has to be the immediate creation of a Palestinian State\, regardless of who will actually benefit\, if anyone at all. It is time to begin Rethinking the End Game. \nThe way to begin a real peace process in the Middle East is to have a viable model that ensures the greatest number of people—of all religions and ethnicities—have access to fundamental rights and services\, while internalizing the importance of tolerance\, pluralism and respect for the rule of law.  Z STREET places those goals in the analysis first – they are the end game – and wouldn’t it make more sense to have the geopolitical configuration facilitate the goal\, rather than be the goal?  It’s time to reset the way people think about the Middle East peace process. \nThat is why\, on May 4th\, Z STREET is bringing together experts who will explain the reality of the immediate future\, and how best to improve that. We will see it from the perspective of human and civil rights\, from an economic standpoint\, and from the cultural perspective.  We will also learn how it will play out in terms of the current vast upheaval in the Arab world. \nCONTACT:   \nLori Lowenthal Marcus\n610.664.1184   LORILOWENTHALMARCUS@ZSTREET.ORG \nTo register\, please go to the registration form \nAGENDA\nWednesday\, May 4\, 2011 \n9:00 –  9:45 a.m.  –  REGISTRATION \n9:45 –  10:00 a.m.  –  WELCOME AND OPENING REMARKS\nLori Lowenthal Marcus\, president Z STREET \n10:00 – 10:20 a.m.  –  LIKELY IMPACT ON THE REGION OF “ARAB SPRING”AND IRAN’S NUCLEAR PROGRESS\nHarold Rhode \n10:20 – 11:20 a.m.  –  FREEDOMS AND DIGNITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST\nHarold Rhode\, moderator\nKhaled abu Toameh\nNonie Darwish\nMordechai Kedar \n11:20 – 11:45 a.m.      BREAK \n11:45 – 12:45 p.m.  –  PROSPERITY AND DIGNITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST\nHarold Rhode\, moderator\nGeorge Gilder\nGal Luft\nSteven J. SUMMARY:"Son of Hamas" briefs Capitol Hill on the ties between the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas
DESCRIPTION:Mosab Hassan Yousef grew up in the West Bank\, the son one of the top founders of Hamas. Revolted by the violence and brutality of Hamas\, Mosab was recruited by Israeli security. Working with his handlers\, Mosab assisted in breaking up terrorist plots\, and was able to get close to the top Hamas leadership. \nMosab will explain how Hamas the terrorist organization is in reality a wing of the international Muslim Brotherhood. With the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt\, it has become all the more vital for our policymakers to understand the reality of the Muslim Brotherhood\, their goals\, objectives\, and methods. \nRSVP to Info@emetonline.org\, with “Mosab Hassan Yousef Feb. 28th briefing” in the subject line.

SUMMARY:Despite Risks\, Arab and Muslim Critics of Jihadism Accept EMET Awards
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from hiding for one night\, Wafa Sultan ignored the fatwas issued against her and came to Capitol Hill in order to receive the EMET Speaker of the Truth Award\, an annual distinction presented to “those heroic Arabic and Islamic voices who speak out against the Jihadist worldview in order to bring change to their communities.” \n“The biggest pleasure in life is to have your worst enemy\, who you were raised to hate with all your heart\, become a dear\, supportive friend\,” said Sultan\, a Syrian-born psychiatrist who emigrated to the United States in 1989. “I owe America my love. It gives me the right to express myself\, unlike the repressive\, Islamic society that suffocated me as a youth.” \nSpeaker of the Truth Awards were also presented to the Syrian dissident Farid Ghadry and Istanbul-native Zeyno Baran. \n“I am extremely gratified to be part of EMET’s cause\,” said Ghadry\, the elected leader in exile of Syria’s Reform Party. Farid is a widely published critic of the current Syrian regime and an outspoken supporter of Israel. After his May 2007 speech to the Israeli Parliament – the first time a Syrian was invited to the Knesset – the Syrian government permanently revoked Ghadry’s citizenship. \n“I admire Israel because I love Syria\,” said Ghadry. “In Syria\, I was taught to hate the Jewish people. But my 33 years in America have taught me to admire them. After all\, has any other people overcome centuries of hatred and oppression to create a democratic country that\, within a mere 60 years\, has become renown as a center for science and medicine? My dream is to see the people of Syria learn from Israel and\, one day\, have a real peace\, where children cross borders to play and people share knowledge and ideas.” \nZeyno Baran’s life work is the promotion of a tolerant Islamic faith that is fused with critical thinking and a respect for democratic institutions. As Director of the Center for Eurasian Policy at the Hudson Institute\, the Stanford-educated scholar has published many articles and spoken frequently of the need to distinguish between Islam as a religion and Islam as a political ideology. Baran is a strong supporter of close ties between Turkey and Israel and is working on strategies to thwart the spread of anti-American ideology in Europe\, Eurasia\, and elsewhere. \n“Islamists are not mainstream Muslims\,” said Baran. “We must be vigilant against extreme versions of Islam that seek to deny millions of Muslims their aspirations to think and live freely.” \nOther honorees at the Second Annual EMET Gala Dinner included Rep. Jim Sexton (R-NJ) and Shelley Berkley (D-NV)\, who were recognized for years of steadfast support for Israel\, and Cal Thomas\, the most widely syndicated columnist in the U.S. They spoke before a record turnout of approximately two hundred people. \n“These are all people at the forefront of the fight against Islamic extremism\,” said Sarah Stern\, President and Founder of EMET. “Reps. Sexton and Berkley are the best friends Israel can have and true champions of freedom. And Cal Thomas’ well-known support of the Jewish State and Western civilization in the face of Islamic extremism deserves our recognition and appreciation\,” she said. \n“But the highlight of the night for me is the courage and heroism of our three Muslim honorees\,” adds Stern. “They are literally risking their lives every day to speak out against Jihadism. I am delighted that EMET is giving them these awards because they not only richly so richly deserve the recognition\, but I hope that by doing so\, we will be encouraging more open-minded Muslims to speak out against the hatred\, tyranny and oppression within their own communities\, and join among the path of the Reformers.

SUMMARY:Round Table Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Stern was invited to a small Round Table Discussion with Michael Chertoff\, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and Dorit Beinisch\, the President of the Israeli Supreme Court\, as well as Sallai Meridor\, the Ambassador of the State of Israel. The discussion was centered around preserving democracy and human Rights\, while under the constant threat of terrorism. Secretary Chertoff had mentioned that for all of Israel’s noble efforts to preserve the human rights and dignity of a potentially combative population\, she gets “virtually no credit”. Judge Dorit Beinish\, had noted that “because of our people’s history\, as always being victims\, we have got to be particularly conscious of the rights of the minorities”. Sarah Stern had brought up the fact that\, since Israel is on the front lines of the war on terrorism\, and that this is new to all of us\, here in the United Sates\, she is sure that there is a great deal that we can learn from Israel’s painful experience\, but that under Article 21 of the United Nations Charter\, it is the primary responsibility of each government to protect their civilian population.
