After being pummeled with rockets from Gaza, on July 7th Israel announced that it had embarked upon a military campaign entitled “Operation Protective Edge” to stop Hamas terrorist attacks from Gaza. Since the beginning of the Operation, more than 1,155 rockets have been fired at Israel, including major Israel cities such as Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beer Sheva, Hadera, and Eilat. Approximately 200 rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, and the Israeli Defense Forces have targeted more than 1,576 terrorist locations.
On Monday, Israel conducted a special operation in Nablus, uncovering hundreds of weapons and arresting dozens of terrorists. While rockets are raining on Israel from Gaza, terrorists in the Judea and Samaria regularly attempt to attack Israeli civilians.
On Tuesday morning, the Israeli security cabinet agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Hamas rejected the proposal, calling it “a surrender,” and about an hour after Israel accepted the truce, a barrage of rocket fire continued to hit Israel. The Israel Defense Forces suspended strikes in Gaza for six hours; during that time, Hamas fired 47 rockets, causing Israel to resume its Operation. “I cannot condemn strongly enough the actions of Hamas in so brazenly firing rockets, in multiple numbers, in the face of a goodwill effort (to secure) a ceasefire,” Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday.
