The war from the Middle East has reached the campuses of the United States, and Jewish and pro-Israel students are on the front lines. The rise of anti-Israel activity and campaigns of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement have crossed the line, causing a rise in anti-Semitic activity at college campuses. According to a recent study, 43% of surveyed Jewish students at U.S. colleges and universities confirm there is anti-Semitism on their campuses. Jewish students are intimidated, bullied, and sometimes physically and violently attacked simply because they are Jewish. Swastikas have been found on dorms from New York University to the University of California, Davis. Jewish students have been targeted with mock “eviction notices,” to inculcate the idea that Israel is an oppressor. In November 2014, four members of the Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) at the University of Arizona (UA) were subjected to anti-Semitic slurs and physically assaulted by students from the SAE fraternity. In March of last year, a UA student attacked the president of the UA chapter of AEPi, striking him unconscious, and causing him to spend three weeks in the hospital, including ten days in the ICU.
What is encouraging the growth and spread of anti-Semitic activity on U.S. college campuses? What serious attempts, if any, have been made to put an end to anti-Semitism on campus by University administrators? And when does anti-Israel activity cross the line into anti-Semitism?
Please join as us as we explore these questions through a screening of Jerusalem U’s film Crossing the Line 2: The New Face of Anti-Semitism on Campus.
Crossing the Line 2: The New Face of Anti-Semitism on Campus is a new documentary that reveals the rise of anti-Israel activity and anti-Semitic rhetoric on North American university campuses, and demonstrates when reasonable criticism of Israel ‘Crosses the Line’ into anti-Semitism.
