EMET’s Sarah Stern Expresses Dismay That Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Has Failed to Grasp the True Meaning of the Menendez-Kirk Legislation

(Washington, DC January 22, 2015) Today the Endowment for Middle East Truth announced that it is disappointed and shocked that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton fails to grasp the meaning of the Menendez-Kirk legislation.

While speaking at a conference in Winnipeg, Canada, Wednesday, former Secretary of State Clinton made the statement, “Why do we want to be the catalyst for the collapse of negotiations?” in reference to a new Iran sanctions bill. Unfortunately, if she had read it, Secretary of State Clinton obviously must have misunderstood the language of the Mendez-Kirk legislation.

The bill clearly stipulates that the sanctions will only kick in if, and only if, the negotiations break down. Rather than having a negative impact on the negotiations, these sanctions should be an incentive for the Iranians to reach a deal and negotiate in good faith. It is unfortunate that a person who is seriously considering running for the office of the President of the United States is simply echoing President Obama’s spin on the bill, which he emphasized during the State of the Union address, rather than taking the time to carefully read and understand the language of the legislation, herself.

Sarah Stern, Founder and President of EMET said, “Far from being a diplomatic handicap, the Menendez-Kirk sanctions legislation is a diplomatic guarantor that the negotiations will be a success.” “It is patently clear that the bill serves as an incentive for successful negotiations,” she added.

Founded in 2005, EMET’s mission is to educate policymakers in Washington and the general public about the importance of Israel to the United States in their common struggle against radical Islam. For more information, please visit www.emetonline.org.
