The Endowment for Middle East Truth is proud to host Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, to discuss two crucial, but under reported issues effecting the Middle East today.

The first is the troubling trend of NATO ally Turkey. Under the rule of the Islamist AKP and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has increasing moved away from Western partners in favor of engaging with radical parties in the region, including trade with the Iranian regime, support for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, and even financing terrorist organizations, most especially Hamas in Gaza.

The second issue focuses on the role played by pervasive corruption among the Palestinian Authority. Jonathan will discuss how this corruption undermines the viability of a future Palestinian state, and how it prevents the establishment of a peaceful resolution with Israel.

Jonathan Schanzer is vice president of research for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the author of the new book State of Failure: Yasser Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State. His previous book, Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine, is still the only book on the market that chronicles the Palestinian civil war. Previously, Dr. Schanzer served as a counterterrorism analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he took part in the designation of numerous terrorism financiers.
