EMET is honored to host Lieutenant General Michael Flynn (ret.) to discuss the current state of the Middle East, and the complexities leading to the events that are cumulating today.

In Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State continues to control large swathes of land. The situation in Syria intensified as Russia joined the bombing campaign in order to assist the regime of Bashar Al-Assad. Tehran continues to send assistance to the Assad regime and Hezbollah supporters in Syria and Lebanon alike. And finally, with Saudi Arabia and Iranian vying for regional influence and backing different actors in the Yemeni civil war, the Middle East is as volatile as it has ever been. Join us and hear from General Michael Flynn as he discusses the implications of these events and how the region may evolve in the near future.

About Lt. General Michael T. Flynn: Three-star Lieutenant General Michael Flynn (ret.) served as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency from 2012 to 2014.  He previously served as the director of intelligence for Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).  General Flynn  has had more than three decades of intelligence experience safeguarding American national security interests in the Middle East.  He served in the JSOC as they tried to dismantle Al-Qaeda, and was the senior intelligence officer in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan.  In 2010, General Flynn published “Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan,” a report that highlighted the need for increased understanding of the Afghani people in order to gather effective and productive intelligence.  General Flynn holds a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College, in addition to having an Honorable Doctorate of Laws from the Washington, D.C.
